Three Ways to Banish Reading Slumps
Are you stuck in a reading slump? Having a hard time focusing on books? Or everything you pick up is just awful? Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. Reading slumps can last anywhere from a couple of days to a year or more. It can be incredibly frustrating to not be able to finish a book or even find one to start because of the dreaded slump. Luckily, there are easy ways to prevent it from lasting for longer than it needs to and you’ll be back to voracious reading in no time!
Method 1: Take a break!
Sometimes you really just need to step back from reading every now and again. It is possible for you to get burnout if you are reading every waking moment of every day. It can be really good to take a day or two and step back from reading. As with anything, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. As counterintuitive as it sounds, but in order to reach your reading goals, you might have to stop reading for a while! Maybe use the time to catch up with that show you’ve been neglecting or the new movie that just hit Netflix. Anything but picking up a book–at least for a little while.
Method 2: Reread your favorite book
Sometimes a reading slump happens because you’re having a hard time picking out your next great read. A massive TBR pile can give you decision making paralysis. It becomes easier to slip into the slump than to expend the effort to just pick something damnit! So why not give your favorite book or book series a reread? It takes decision making out of the equation, and you know that you’re going to enjoy your time spent reading. It can get discouraging sometimes not being able to find a good book to read. I love to revisit my favorite books every now and then to remind myself why I love reading as much as I do.
Method 3: Get inspiration from Booktube
Youtube has a plethora of book content creators for every genre, trope, and much more. It can be kind of a slog to find a creator with the same taste as you, but once you do it opens up a world of recommendations for you to explore. This method really helps when you just can’t seem to find something that catches your interest, or if you want to read something similar to something else you just finished. It also helps with taking a break from actually reading. What better way to spend your time than watching someone else talk about books and reading?
